Don’t Go Back to Sleep.

“Today, like every other day, we wake up empty
and frightened. Don’t open the door to the study
and begin reading. Take down a musical instrument.
Let the beauty we love be what we do.
There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.

The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don’t go back to sleep.
You must ask for what you really want.
Don’t go back to sleep.
People are going back and forth across the doorsill
where the two worlds touch.
The door is round and open.
Don’t go back to sleep.

Daylight, full of small dancing particles
and the one great turning, our souls
are dancing with you, without feet, they dance.
Can you see them when I whisper in your ear?” – Jalāl ad-Dīn Rumi

My darlings, perhaps one of my favorite passages from 13th century poet and mystic, Jalāl ad-Dīn Rumi – one that speaks directly to the grace of our existence.

At times, we may feel such heaviness. Uncertain of our ‘way forward’ we feel the burden of internal conflict. In our irrepressible pursuit of happiness, we end up – oddly, unbalanced.

And yet, each morning we awaken, once again. Free of our troubles, our doubts, our doubts – with spirit, graciously renewed. Between these two worlds, there are ‘no strings attached’ – no story lines, nor underlying ‘currents.’

“You must ask for what you really want.”

It is precisely within this brief moment in time, that we realize the true potential of our existence. Linger there, just a bit, my dears – have faith in your presence.

“Daylight, full of small dancing particles and the one great turning, our souls are dancing with you.”

Oh, my dearest darlings – I beg of you, please…”don’t go back to sleep.”
