The Truth as We Believe It.

I remember once when I was a little girl my teacher asked, “What do you like to be when you grow up?”

It was the first time I had ever been presented the choice of ‘being’ anything and all that I might wish to be.

That night I raced home to ‘compile’ my list – a poet, a dancer, a climber of trees. Maybe even a veterinarian.

The next morning, I sat impatiently waiting to share my discovery. But, when the teacher finally called my name, she scoffed, “Silly girl, you can’t possibly be all of those things.”

What a heartbreaking lesson on limitation, don’t you think? That we must decide so early on, and then? Never, ever change.

But the truth of the matter is far more profound. That is to say, in any given moment we can ‘be’ all that we wish to be.

As children we’re taught to listen to the grown ups; to accept without hesitation the conditions which have been levied upon us. That we are, at once – “just this.” That there is no room for change.

Though, everything is continuously changing. The trees shift their color at each season’s passing. Nothing is ever twice the same.

But, the ‘truth’ is – we define our view of this world. As such, we define our experience within it.

Though time and time again, we lose our place to another’s vision. We forget that this precious human life is ours for the discovering.

And, can you imagine this world any other way?

My goodness, there’d be no Rosa Parks, nor a path to civil freedom. That road less travelled would be left desperately unexplored. And those waterlilies wouldn’t dare to paint themselves.

No, no – thankfully there is always another way. A step outside the box into the space of our own breath.

Leaving us this room to grow – to live, to learn, to become all and anything we might ever wish to be.

And it all begins with the willingness to believe.

Namaste, my loves ~
