What Does Service Mean?

A friend recently asked, “Tara–what joy do you get from helping others.”

Shocked by his incredulous remark, I went on to list my reasons.

I described the hope which fills my heart, that indescribable joy which comes by way of alleviating the suffering of others. I outlined the ‘short list’ of a hundred or so reasons why this world needs more love.

At the end, he smiled and said, “Exactly ~ so how could you dare to keep this joy from another?”

And, so I listened – I allowed another’s kindness in, a gift of food for our Thanksgiving table. Then realizing the opportunity at hand, my daughter and I packed a parcel for the heart of another.

We travelled to a busy stretch of highway where an elderly man sat dejected. His clothing worn to nearly threadbare, his eyes casting a quickly fading light. “Happy Thanksgiving,” I smiled – “someone helped us, now we are helping you.”

His face warmed in this light of compassion, and for the first time – I caught a glimpse of hope.

We then turned down a side street, to stop for a quick cup of coffee at a place we’ve never been before. A handsome stranger held the door in kindness – his eyes offering a familiar glow. After a few moments, I heard him call out, “Tara…?” It was a dear friend I hadn’t seen in over 25 years.

To say I didn’t want to let go would be an understatement, I assure you. I mean, can you imagine the miracle that carried us here? One split second either here or there, and I would have missed him, for sure.

And that was just the beginning. For in waking, I saw the true gift in this journey – over 200 messages from strangers, now friends offering love from every corner of this world.

My darlings, I could lose all the material without a moments hesitation. Though, to live without your heart – I’d be lost.

We are simple ‘conduits’, my love – shepherds for all that is right in this world.

Because of you – this journey continues.

Because of you – love knows no bounds.

Thank you to all of you who’ve shared your heart so freely here; I promise you in will be continued in service to others.

What joy do I get in helping others?

My darlings, it is the immeasurable joy of knowing you. Thank you to all who’ve lent their support, it has touched me in ways you’ll never know.

Namaste, my loves ~ on this day, I now humbly to you
