The Joy of Fully Present.

I’m reminded this morning of a passage from Thich Nhat Hanh’s Being Peace:

“Life is filled with suffering, but it is also filled with many wonders, like the blue sky, the sunshine, the eyes of a baby. To suffer is not enough. We must also be in touch with the wonders of life. They are within us and all around us, everywhere, any time.”

It is a poignant reminder that through all of our troubles, there is always an opportunity to transcend. Within any given moment, we may rise up, we may take note, we may open our hearts to a deepened understanding. Even when suffering may threaten to fill our lives, still – we have this choice at hand.

And yet, so many have learned to hold onto their sorrows; to experience life’s ‘sharpened edge’, whilst allowing joy to slip away.

If only we might learn to yield space, to that which has the capacity to pull us fully into this present moment. Brother Thay refers to this as the practice of arriving. Though, more simply put – it is the practice of being alive.

“Breathing in, I calm my body.
Breathing out, I smile.
Dwelling in the present moment,
I know this is a wonderful moment!”

My darlings, on this day I wish you the joy of being fully present.
