The hardening of our hearts begins quite slowly, my loves.
At first, a simple pang – a sharp twinge, a moment of ‘redirection’. But then, it grows – the heart shelters before the understanding begins.
We are injured at the very thought of another’s transgression. Though, we understand — really we do — we can not help but to feel that our wealth of loving-kindness has been displaced.
We seek first to soothe. And, then?
We become lost in the energy of ‘having missed our chance.’
But, it’s never too late, my loves — to soften that which seems unyielding.
In her book “Practicing Peace in Times of War” Pema Chodron writes:
“We can talk about ending war and we can march for ending war, we can do everything in our power, but war is never going to end as long as our hearts are hardened against each other.”
Though, inclination might force us elsewhere — we must always remember our higher point of service. That is, to disentangle our initial reaction from that which may ultimately save.
Not everything is so black and white, my loves. And, we can’t possibly understand everything at first pass. But, we must always try.
Why?
Because, who else shall save humanity? My darlings, it’s you and I.
On this day – I wish you a lasting peace. Though, more so — I wish you the courage to unharden your soul.
