A Ship Closest to Shore.

I was inspired this morning by the following passage, from Zora Neale Hurston’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God.”

“Ships at a distance have every man’s wish on board. For some they come in with the tide. For others they sail forever on the horizon, never out of sight, never landing until the Watcher turns his eyes away in resignation, his dreams mocked to death by Time. That is the life of men.”

I’m not certain what drew me to these words. My life is often happenstance; clever twists and turns encouraging me along yet another path. Perhaps, it was the nature of the metaphor; that man must, at heart, pursue that which most appeases spirit.

As we look out onto the horizon, we see our own dreams passing like vessels into the night. And, if we are graced with fortune enough, those wishes may finally come to shore. But, life is just this way – a perpetual journey to and fro. At times, marked with flawless ambition; while, at other times, we face the limitations of time.

Yet still, the dream remains; the fire never subsides. In this way, our heart serves as a beacon of sorts ~ calling even the furthest of ships ‘home’ to shore. Though ultimately we must accept responsibility for its care; we must open our hearts fully to the nature of this experience.

The Buddha emphasized an attitude of honest self-reflection; to maintain perspective even when our hearts may feel overwhelmed.

And, recognizing that, in time, all ships return to home.

In peace, my loves ~
