Character of the Happy Warrior.

“Who is the happy Warrior?” asks poet, William Wordsworth. “Who is he that every man in arms should wish to be?”

He was speaking to the truest nature of this life; that often we’re not presented our choosing, rather we are gifted that which cultivates our light. A path fraught with caging of worry; of hope mottled by these pleadings of circumstance.

“It is the generous Spirit, who, when brought
Among the tasks of real life, hath wrought
Upon the plan that pleased his boyish thought:
Whose high endeavours are an inward light
That makes the path before him always bright”

A path illuminated through the trials of our being; a path befitting the humbled ‘warrior’. Who finds within the broken slats of a once white picket fence, memories of a summer’s bloom. And, mindful to the conditions which cause the petals will to rise once more.

“Who, doomed to go in company with Pain,
And Fear, and Bloodshed, miserable train!
Turns his necessity to glorious gain;
In face of these doth exercise a power
Which is our human nature’s highest dower:
Controls them and subdues, transmutes, bereaves
Of their bad influence, and their good receives:
By objects, which might force the soul to abate.”

Herein, we find our place; the crossroads between choice and fate. Who is the happy warrior, is it you? Who’ll find his way through lesser chance; transfixed, in part, through the perpetuity of bloom.

“Her feeling, rendered more compassionate;
Is placable because occasions rise
So often that demand such sacrifice;
More skilful in self-knowledge, even more pure,
As tempted more; more able to endure,
As more exposed to suffering and distress;
Thence, also, more alive to tenderness.”

It is the happy warrior who minds not more, and suffers less.

In peace, my loves..
